The Bismarck, the flagship of the German Kriegsmarine, was the largest German warship next to the Tirpitz and had 50,900 t water displacement and 2,092 crew. Commissioned on 24.08.1940, she sailed on 18.05.1941 for Operation Rheinübung. Together with the Prinz Eugen, however, she was discovered early by British air reconnaissance. During the encounter with the Hood, she was sunk by the Bismarck on 24.05.1941. After a long pursuit, she received an aircraft torpedo hit on 26 May 1941 and was captured by the British battleships King George V and H.M.S. Rodney. On 27 May, the own team sinks the Bismarck 490 km off the French coast.
