Specially designed for close air support, the Warthog was put into service in 1975. Literally built around the 30mm GAU-8 Gatling cannon, the A-10 is also capable of carrying a huge weapon payload under its wings and under the fuselage, including AGM-65 Maverick missiles. The A-10 is a highly resilient aircraft that features redundant hydraulic systems supported by manual systems. It can survive direct hits from armor-piercing cartridges without damage. During Operation Desert Storm, it flew 8,100 sorties, was involved in actions in Afghanistan, and was an important weapon system on the battlefield during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
