The first large modern models of the "80s generation" for towing semi-trailers were the F12 tractors, which came on the market in autumn 1977 and replaced the F89 from 1970. Research results were incorporated into the development of these models with a completely new advanced cabin, which led to the introduction of the N models in 1973. This applies in particular to the special high-strength steel chassis and the drive components, which have also been improved and reinforced. The standard use of aluminum tanks and parabolic springs became necessary because the weight of the tractor had to be reduced as much as possible in order to increase the payload. The working conditions for the driver on board the F12 were excellent, which is essential especially on the long distances of international traffic.
